Below is cost (in $1000’s of Can $) versus range for most of the EVs that are presently available in Canada. The cost is from the manufacturer websites as of March 2024 MSRP and includes delivery and sales tax, minus the available federal $5k rebate when applicable. (i.e. the $ amount shown is what the total cost of a vehicle should be.) The supply of EVs is not as tight as a year or two ago, so there may even be some wiggle room on pricing. For this 2024 chart, the charging rates are not included as most cars charge quite quickly now, but it is highly recommended to do some research about the charging rate of a car you may want, as it is highly relevant when doing long distance driving. Some models of EVs are available in a bewildering number of variations, and not every variation is shown on the chart. The chart does show 2 wheel drive versus 4 wheel drive versions when available.

For those of you looking for the lowest cost EV, notice there are a few models in the $40-50k “all in” price range with approx. 400 km range.

(Below the 2024 chart is the February 2023 chart showing the models, pricing (includes MSRP and rebate, but add the 13% tax in this chart) and ranges, and does include a legend for charging rates specified at that time.)

Notes to 2023 chart:

Just a few years back the cost and range of an EV was a defining set of parameters, but now, many buyers are also very conscious of getting a car with the a high kW (power) charging rate. To provide that information, the 2023 directly above has a legend that shows the charging rate as being in one of four “km of range per 15 minutes” categories. The legend is based on how many km of distance you get when charging at the car’s maximum rated kW (power) charge rate for 15 minutes. Keep in mind these rates vary due to battery temperature, battery overall state of charge and maybe the actual Level 3 charger as well. (For detailed EV charge test results, watch Tom Moloughney’s “State of Charge” YouTubes)

The vehicle prices are from the January 2023 data on the automaker’s Canadian website for Ontario (including Tesla’s January 2023 price drops), they also include dealer and delivery fees. Cars with a base MSRP price below $55k qualify for the post tax rebate of $5k in Ontario and the chart includes that rebate where applicable. Just add tax for your likely price. Some of the EVs come in a large variety of model options (standard range battery, long range battery, 2WD, 4WD, performance, etc.). Some other provinces, notably, BC, Quebec and N.S. have additional rebates. Generally the lowest and highest cost versions of models are shown.
